As a well-known nose surgeon, Dr. Pearlman receives a lot of questions about nose surgeries like septoplasty, or septum repair. In NYC at Pearlman Aesthetic Surgery, we see patients for rhinoplasties and deviated septum surgery in New Jersey and the tri-state area.
These are some of the most common questions we get:
How do I know if my septum needs repair?
Your septum is the piece of cartilage and bone that divides your nostrils. Chronic nasal congestion—that is frequently more so on one side—bleeding, and frequent sinus infections are just some of the signs you might be dealing with a septum concern.
Perforation
A perforated septum has a hole in it, and while this doesn’t always cause problems, it can lead to unwanted symptoms of nasal crusting, the feeling of obstruction, and nosebleeds, requiring perforation repair. Unless the perforation is very large, surgical closure should alleviate those symptoms.
Deviation
Do you ever feel like one side of your nose is always stuffed up or blocked? That may indicate you have a deviated septum, which is the most common cause of continual nasal obstruction.
How does septum repair work?
Septoplasty, or septum repair, is a surgical procedure that corrects a deviated nasal septum. It typically begins with local or general anesthesia, followed by an incision inside one nostril to access the septum. Then Dr. Pearlman reshapes or repositions the cartilage and bone and closes the incision, potentially using nasal packing to support your healing.
During your consultation, Dr. Pearlman and our Patient Care Coordinator can walk through the specifics of your surgery and anticipated timeline.
Will my insurance cover septum surgery?
If your septum repair is deemed medically necessary, yes—depending on your plan. If you have breathing blockages and can provide documentation of treatment for nasal obstruction, insurance may cover your septum repair in NYC and the tri-state area. This coverage typically applies only to the functional aspect of septoplasty, not to cosmetic procedures like rhinoplasty.
