Welcome to Pearlman Aesthetic Surgery for teenage rhinoplasty in NYC on Park Avenue.
Teenage rhinoplasty is a procedure that corrects or improves the appearance of the nose by fixing issues like a large nasal hump, wide and/or drooping nasal tip, wide nostrils, asymmetry, and lack of proportion.
By surgically altering the nasal structure to ensure optimal facial balance, proportionality, and symmetry, a teenage rhinoplasty can empower young patients to sail through these turbulent years without feeling self-conscious of their nose. The emotional and psychological results of rhinoplasty in teens often outweighs the physical changes made.
Teenage Rhinoplasty Concerns
Teenagers are relentlessly subjected to peer pressure in real life and online for perceived differences.
For many teenagers, a supposedly abnormal or deformed nose can cause crippling social anxiety and embarrassment.
Parents are often conflicted about whether to encourage their children to seek plastic surgery.
Doesn’t it send the wrong message? Shouldn’t they rather encourage their children to embrace their flaws?
However, no matter how much you espouse the virtues of self-love, the world can be a cruel place, and teenagers are especially vulnerable. Emotional traumas sustained in one’s adolescent years usually persist through adulthood, which can lead to severe social anxiety, self-consciousness, and other developmental issues.
Allowing your child to undergo teenage rhinoplasty may save them from considerable emotional scars. However, this isn’t an easy decision, and you must weigh all your options, patiently discussing them with your children.
Teenage rhinoplasty is a suitable option for girls typically starting around age 15 and age 16 for boys. This is the age when their nose and facial features usually stop growing, making them suitable candidates for teenage rhinoplasty. Furthermore, children over the age of 14 are more capable of weighing their options to make a mature decision.
Teenagers should also have the mental and emotional maturity and parental support necessary to make such a decision. They should carefully think about the consequences of their decision and have a well-reasoned motivation for undergoing surgery. They may be advised to wait if they’re not yet deemed physically or emotionally mature enough to make the decision to undergo teenage rhinoplasty.
Parents should also note that the rhinoplasty procedure is followed by a one-and-a-half to two-week recovery period. Your child may have to miss up to two weeks of school and avoid sports or gym classes for up to two months. As such, parents often schedule the teenage rhinoplasty during summer or prolonged winter breaks, giving their children enough time to heal and recover.

A Personal Consultation With Dr. Pearlman
How it Works
Establish Your Goals
Full Nose Examination & Imaging
Determine Mutual Goals
Dr. Pearlman will begin the consultation listening to your child’s concerns about their nose, specific issues they are looking to resolve, and desired results from teenage rhinoplasty.
Based upon the patient’s unique nasal anatomy, intricacies of the nose, and goals, he will then perform a full examination of the nose inside and out. Using advanced Mirror® 2D and Vectra® 3D imaging, Dr. Pearlman will demonstrate the potential changes to the nose to help envision future results.
Teenagers are very visual and the use of this technology is vital to understanding not only the potential changes and improvements to the nose itself, but also to visualize the new nose and how it blends with the rest of the patient’s facial features.
Lastly, you and Dr. Pearlman will establish mutual goals to enhance the appearance and breathing function of the nose.
The best teenage rhinoplasty surgeon should be able to provide a wealth of information regarding the procedure.
Throughout the rhinoplasty consultation at our NYC office, we highly encourage parent(s) and the patient to ask any and every question on their mind. We will walk you through every step of the process so you can feel confident in the decision to receive a teenage rhinoplasty by Dr. Steven Pearlman.
Dr. Pearlman makes incisions to provide access to the underlying structure of the nose. A closed or scarless rhinoplasty technique places all the incisions inside the nostrils, so there is no visible scarring. Dr. Pearlman uses this for the majority of his primary rhinoplasties.
An open technique places a tiny incision on the base of the nose between the nostrils. This incision heals so that it is barely visible, if at all and only when viewed up close and from below the nose. Dr. Pearlman often says “someone will have to be close enough to be able to count your nasal hairs to see this incision.”
Dr. Pearlman will discuss the reasons for choosing incisions at the time of your consultation.
Dr. Pearlman removes, reshapes, and adds cartilage where needed to correct the appearance of the nose. He removes wide nasal bony humps with precision micro instruments. Removing cartilage and suture contouring corrects a large nasal tip.
Reshaping cartilage and adding support using the patient’s own cartilage can address a drooping nasal tip. Form and function go together in rhinoplasty. This is what Dr. Pearlman stresses when lecturing around the world. He often adds grafts of the patient’s own cartilage to maintain or enhance nasal support during cartilage shaping.
Once Dr. Pearlman properly shapes the nose, he closes the incisions. Dr. Pearlman places nasal packing and splints to help support the nose while it heals. He no longer uses nasal packing in the vast majority of patients that significantly reduces postoperative discomfort. Finally, he places an external cast splint on the nose to be left on for one week.
Teenage Rhinoplasty Recovery
Dr. Pearlman and his staff will closely guide you through your post operative care. He will provide detailed instructions on all aspects of the process to help guide your recovery.
What To Expect
Your first visit to our office will be scheduled for one week post-op, when we remove the cast and any external sutures used (in open rhinoplasty and alarplasty).
In addition, the nose is cleaned and carefully suctioned internally.
Subsequent visits are at 2 and 6 months, and one year post-op for photographs. Most patients will see 85% of their results at 1 month out, 95% of results at 6 months out and 99% at 1 year.
Natural, Beautiful Teenage Rhinoplasty Results
The best compliment we get following rhinoplasty is when patients are told they “look great” but the observer cannot tell why.
“Rhinoplasty will improve the appearance and function of your nose so it naturally complements your face. The best noses are the ones that aren’t obvious; that respect your ethnic identity. Surgery is tailored to each patient’s needs and desires, creating a more harmonious appearance.”

Frequently Asked Questions
Can teen rhinoplasty correct breathing abnormalities?
A septoplasty may be performed in conjunction with a rhinoplasty to correct breathing problems caused by a deviated septum. Septoplasties are commonly performed on teens with breathing impairments. For breathing issues alone, a septoplasty can be performed without any external changes to the nose whatsoever.
How do I know if my child is ready for a teenage rhinoplasty?
Talking to your teen and understanding his or her motivations for the surgery is an important step in understanding if s/he is ready. Your teen should understand this is a surgical procedure and, while rare, may pose risks and complications.
Good candidates for teenage rhinoplasty understand that surgery won’t change their lives; it is merely a tool to help enhance their natural beauty and improve their confidence. Yet we often find that the change in one’s self-image and self-esteem far outweighs the physical changes from rhinoplasty.
What age is appropriate for rhinoplasty?
The appropriate age for rhinoplasty depends. Teenage rhinoplasty is typically appropriate for girls over 15 years of age and boys over 16 years of age, when their nose and facial features usually stop growing, making them suitable candidates for teenage rhinoplasty. Children over the age of 15 are usually at an appropriate age for making their own informed, mature decision.
What is the advantage of computer imaging?
Dr. Pearlman utilizes Mirror computer imaging and VECTRA 3D imaging technology during his consultations for all primary rhinoplasty patients, including for teenage rhinoplasty consultations. Mirror and VECTRA 3D imaging allow Dr. Pearlman to manipulate a “before” photo of the patient’s face to visually demonstrate the effects of the rhinoplasty procedure. This technology allows you to preview an approximation of what the nose will look like after surgery so you and Dr. Pearlman can decide what techniques will best suit your needs.
What will the first week of recovery entail?
Your child will have some bruising and swelling around the eyes during the first week of recovery. Some patients need time to adjust to breathing through their mouth; it’s akin to having a mild cold. Fatigue from the anesthesia is common for the first day or two. Patients should rest the first few days in an upright position to minimize swelling for better healing.
Will others notice that my child has had a nose job?
As a dual board-certified facial plastic surgeon in NYC, Dr. Pearlman takes great care to craft noses that enhance the appearance, not alter it. He prides himself in achieving extremely natural results that will leave people wondering, “what’s different?” The best compliment we get following rhinoplasty is when patients are told they “look great” but the observer cannot tell why.
Will there be any lasting scarring?
If Dr. Pearlman uses a closed, scarless rhinoplasty technique, there won’t be any visible scarring. If he uses an open technique, there will be a tiny incision at the base of the nose between the nostrils, but this incision will likely fade over time and is small to start with. It is often undetectable to the naked eye. During your consultation, Dr. Pearlman will discuss which technique is most appropriate for your unique nose.
