The Procedure
Lip Reduction Recovery
During your initial visit, Dr. Pearlman will examine your lips and work with you to choose the best approach for your needs and unique anatomy. Then, you will both establish mutual goals for your lip reduction surgery in New York City. Dr. Pearlman will go over the process and expectations, as well as take the time to answer any of your questions about lip reduction surgery.
During your lip reduction procedure at our Manhattan office, Dr. Pearlman will mark the areas for incisions to remove excess lip skin, tissue, and scar. This may be on the upper lip, lower lip, or both, based on your desired results.
He will then administer a local anesthesia (general anesthesia is an option but rarely necessary) before creating the incisions inside the mouth in the areas marked. He will then remove excess fat, tissue, and scar, creating a balanced shape and size before closing the incisions with stitches. The procedure process takes approximately 30 minutes per lip.
We advise most patients to take about one week off from work in order to recover from a lip reduction procedure. While swelling and soreness may last for a few days, over-the-counter pain medications and the application of ice packs are all that is needed.
You will need to eat soft foods for the first few days and avoid citrus or other acidic foods or beverages that could irritate the tissue of your inner lips. It typically takes one to two weeks for the sutures to be ready for removal, with full results achieved at about 3 to 6 months.
