Welcome to Pearlman Aesthetic Surgery for microneedling in NYC on Park Avenue.

SkinPen® microneedling uses tiny sterile needles to safely and precisely create controlled micro-injuries to the skin, triggering new collagen production.

Creating Smoother Skin

There are certain skin concerns that are nearly impossible to reduce or eradicate with products alone, including stretch marks and scars.

You may feel self-conscious about your uneven skin texture, and this can be hard on your self-esteem. One of the best skin resurfacing methods is microneedling.

SkinPen® is the world’s first FDA-cleared microneedling device. It is used to improve the skin’s tone and texture, reduce pigmentation and improve scars and stretch marks by promoting new collagen production.

A Word on SkinPen® for Different Types of Scars

New York street signs and smoke

General

Since scars represent significant damage to the skin, you will need new collagen product to reduce or eliminate them. The three most common types of acne scars are ice pick scars, boxcar scars, and rolling scars. Depending on the type of scar you have, we will customize your SkinPen® treatment to meet the individual scar formations on your skin. Your treatment settings are unique and often varying depths are utilized to be more aggressive in some areas, and less aggressive in others. This is truly couture skincare!

Ice Pick Scars

Ice Pick scars are the most common type of scarring caused by acne, they are characterized by their hole-like shape left from an ice pick. Ice Pick acne scars are deep and narrow, which makes it difficult for them to be filled up naturally with collagen, and some are too deep to heal entirely. These acne scars are usually less than 2mm across and caused by inflamed comedones (blackheads) or acne vulgaris (whiteheads).

Boxcar Scars

Boxcar acne scars are like Ice Pick scars, however the Boxcar scars are wide and more rectangular with vertical edges. Boxcar scars are usually found on the temples and cheeks, and they can be deep or shallow. The majority of Boxcar scars are not as deep as Ice Pick scars.

Rolling Scars

Rolling scars are the least common of the three, typically they are shallow and wide. Damage causes rolling scars under the uppermost surface of the skin, they are round and give the skin a rolling, wavelike appearance.

Recovery & Downtime

We typically recommend a series of 3–5 treatments for optimal results.

Each treatment will induce some collagen remodeling, and we can use microneedling for ongoing skin maintenance.

Treatment time will vary depending on the surface area treated but typically will range from 15 to 30 minutes.

Because we apply topical anesthetic ahead of time; plan to spend between 30 and 60 minutes in the office.

Immediately after a micro-needling treatment the skin can appear flushed like a light sunburn to deeper pink with pinpoint bleeding for deeper treatments.

Typically, any redness will resolve within 1 or 2 days. You can apply make-up immediately if desired. You can use ice packs or cool compresses to soothe the skin. Practice good sun protection and avoid abrasive topicals or treatments for 2 to 3 days.

Your skin will need multiple treatments to get the best results from SkinPen®. Through microneedling, you will notice smoother overall skin texture and a reduction in the appearance of scars.

Frequently Asked Questions

Microneedling

Are there any contraindications for a SkinPen® treatment?

You should not get micro-needling if you have vitiligo, an active skin infection (such as flat warts or a cold sore), or if you’ve taken isotretinoin within the past 6 months. Please notify your provider if you are prone to excessive/keloid scarring or have a collagen vascular disease such as lupus.

Does the SkinPen® treatment hurt?

Deeper micro-needling treatments can be uncomfortable, so we typically apply a topical anesthetic ahead of time to reduce any discomfort. More superficial treatments are well-tolerated with no anesthetic.

How is microneedling with SkinPen® different from a laser resurfacing treatment?

Unlike lasers, SkinPen® breaks up pigment mechanically and remodels the collagen without heat. This can make the treatment safer and more comfortable for some patients.
