Surgical vs Non-Surgical Rhinoplasty: What’s the Difference?

When you’re considering a rhinoplasty, you’ll undoubtedly want to explore some of the alternatives. Committing to cosmetic surgery is an investment of time, money, and your emotions, so you may be curious about surgical vs non-surgical rhinoplasty.

How non-surgical rhinoplasty works

Non-surgical rhinoplasty uses strategically placed dermal fillers to temporarily change the appearance of the nose. If patients have medical problems that preclude surgery or get a great result from using fillers, they are a good candidate for non-surgical rhinoplasty.

What are dermal fillers?

Fillers are a gel-like substance injected under the skin to add volume and enhance facial features. Most fillers are created from hyaluronic acid, a substance naturally found in the body. This compound dissolves over time as the body metabolizes it, so dermal fillers are a temporary solution.

Where are the injections placed?

The most common area where we inject filler is in the area above the nasal hump and below the forehead, called the radix. We use filler to expand the nose above and below the hump to make it less prominent.

We can also fill below a hump above the tip as well as expand the tip to make it appear to point upward with filler.

Lastly, we can also place filler at the base of the nose to help push the tip upward. For some patients, we also use Botox to weaken the muscle called the depressor septi nasi, which helps the tip to go up as well.

When should you consider rhinoplasty surgery instead?

Non-surgical rhinoplasty might be right for you if you’re looking to add volume or enhance the tip of your nose. However, if you’re looking for permanent and dramatic changes to the shape of your nose, you are better suited for a surgical rhinoplasty procedure.
