FUE

FUE stands for follicular unit extraction and is a specialized technique for harvesting donor follicles for a hair transplant procedure. FUE uses tiny (1 millimeter or less) circular incisions to extract individual follicles. Instead of the horizontal scar typical with other methods, FUE mustache and beard transplants in NYC leave only tiny scars that are virtually invisible.

FUT

FUT stands for follicular unit transplantation and is the technical name for “strip harvesting” where we use a narrow strip of your scalp a donor site for a hair transplant. FUT is the most common and traditional method of hair transplantation. It will leave a long scar, so it is best for those with long enough hair to cover it.

The Procedure

Recovery and Results

The first step of this process is an in-person consultation with our hair restoration surgeon to discuss your goals. We will also come to an understanding together of the best option and approach to get the results you’re looking for. Once we have determined that this facial hair transplant procedure is right for you, we will design a treatment plan tailored to your needs.

The procedure process will depend on which type of facial hair transplant you receive, either FUE or FUT. With an FUE, your surgeon will individually harvest each follicle and implant it into the target areas. This is less invasive and patients simply relax during the process.

With FUT, your hair surgeon will determine the donor site and prepare it for extraction. Then, we will excise a small strip from the donor area and immediately close the incision. The surgeon then carefully processes the strip to remove the follicles and prepare them for transplant and integration into the targeted treatment area.

We will numb the facial hair area, then make tiny incisions throughout the treatment area to insert the new hair follicle grafts.

Once the transplant is complete, we will gently cleanse the treatment area and give you detailed aftercare instructions to ensure the transplant is successful. Most patients recover to resume most activities within a few days, with limitations on strenuous activities.

After 10 days, you will return to our Manhattan clinic to have the sutures removed. Within the first couple of weeks, you can expect to see the newly transplanted hair shedding. This shedding is a normal and healthy part of the process as your newly transplanted follicles start a new growth cycle. You can expect real hair growth within the first 3 to 4 months, after which it will grow normally along with the rest of your facial hair.

Frequently Asked Questions
